Upon arrival at the student convention, Senator Rand Paul made an effort to reach out to students through our favorite pastime: taking selfies. “The Rand Paul Selfie Session,” which took place prior to his speech, allowed students the opportunity to meet the Senator as well as snap a quick picture with him. After his speech, students came away with a better knowledge of Senator Paul’s positions, allowing them to make a better-informed choice on which candidate’s positions they align with most in the presidential primary. Rand focused much of his speech on criminal justice reform, drug reform, foreign policy, and the economy. Rand also acknowledged the problem with the “War on Drugs” disproportionately affecting minorities. He also discussed privacy, saying that the NSA is quickly eroding our fourth amendment rights by collecting and storing citizen’s phone records without a warrant. Rand stressed the importance of this presidential race being not about him, but about the issues and the importance of civil rights and individual liberties.
